MEMOLab participation in: Living Lab Heritage & Society: Theoretical and Methodological Background for the Co-construction of Heritage Knowledge with the Local Community
As part of the Living Lab Heritage & Society Microcredential Programme, the activities for: Archaeological Heritage and Society took place on 24 June 2026 and were coordinated by Elena Correa (MEMOLab, University of Granada).
The programme combined lectures, discussion, and field-based learning to provide participants with the theoretical and methodological foundations for understanding archaeology as a tool for participatory heritage management and territorial intervention.
The morning sessions introduced the MEMOLab approach to community archaeology, focusing on cultural landscapes of water, historical irrigation systems, the social management of water, and irrigation communities as cultural heritage. Participants also explored practical examples of MEMOLab's work, including the recovery of historical irrigation channels, collaborative mapping initiatives, citizen science projects, and public archaeology programmes. In addition, the sessions presented the work currently being carried out within the SECreTOUR project, highlighting research on heritage communities and their role as key stakeholders in the participatory conservation, management, and enhancement of cultural heritage.
The day concluded with a discussion featuring Liliana Neves (Lab2PT, University of Minho) and a field workshop on collaborative mapping as a tool for the social construction of heritage, jointly facilitated by MEMOLab (University of Granada) and Lab2PT (University of Minho). The practical session was recorded, subtitled, and subsequently made available as a learning resource for the Microcredential Programme.
